Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
