The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
